Herman Messing founded Carillon Lingerie in 1943 and was very successful. In the 1950’s Carillon expanded into an enormous custom built factory in Brooklyn. Fred Messing was told it was the largest factory in Brooklyn at the time. Unfortunately, cheap goods from Europe emerging from WWII as a result of the Marshal Plan undercut Carillon’s prices to the point that the company folded in 1962. The photograph shows Herman with his second wife Jean with Fred at his bar mitzvah celebration in 1961.
